Publication: Enhancing the Doctoral Experience

I’m really proud to have been involved in “Enhancing the Doctoral Experience”. I worked with my friends Steve Hutchinson (Hutchinson Training & Development) and Dave Filipović-Carter (Education Training & the Open University) on this project, and it feels like it’s been a long time in coming to fruition.

The book is about the relationship between supervisors and PhD students – specifically overseas students but the principles apply to all. It is intended for supervisors and provides a pragmatic approach to improving the efficacy of the relationship and the interactions between students and supervisors in order to enhance the doctoral experience for all.

We started by talking to many doctoral students and supervisors, inviting stories and tips for those embarking on the doctoral adventure. Then we wove these stories together with some information about the global nature of research and some wisdom about professional relationships and hey presto! the book was born.

Here’s what Prof Tom McLeish, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research) at Durham University, wrote about it:

This is a practical yet scholarly treatment in support of a vital but underrated academic relationship – that of doctoral supervisor and student. Although focussed on the needs of international students, its sage advice and helpful suggestions are more generally applicable. I wish I had been able to access such material when starting off as a new academic; I anticipate transformational effects when put into practice.

“Enhancing the Doctoral Experience” is due to be published in late November 2014, and is available to pre-order from Amazon now.
